Dragonsong
In a world of humans and dragons on the planet Pern an ancient terror threatens again. The spore-like Thread rains upon the planet from a nearby star, devouring all life in it's path.DragonSong is the story of a teenage girl named Menolly whose amazing musical talent is unaccepted by her community and least of all by her rigid parents who are the leaders of the small seaport of Half-Circle Sea Hold. Their continual surpression of her music, which is so important to her, leads her to run a away from home to face survival alone during the onslaught of the deadly threadfall. Seeking safety in a cave by the sea, she rediscovers the mythical fire lizards, the ancestors of the great dragons that daily scorch thread from the skies, and who lead her to her destiny at Pern's Harper Hall. This story and the rest of the Harper Hall trilogy is among Anne McCaffrey's best as well as being a wonderful introduction to her entire Pern series. Menolly's struggles to find a place in her world are that of any adolescent but the imaginative setting of the planet Pern with it's intricate social structure and it's fantasical dragons are equally intriging. All in all it is a wonderful tale to enchant young science fiction and fantasy readers

I was twelve years old and very sick with pneumonia when my mother gave me this series to read. I'd been raised on the classics: Tennyson, Scott, Kipling, Doyle and Burnett were my favorites. I think my parents thought that anything else would rot my young mind. And, in fact, when my mother handed me this book with the fascinating little dragons on the cover, she warned me that I was to read it in small doses, regulated my her. I fell instantly in love. In one fell swoop I discovered Science Fiction, escapist literature, and Anne McCaffrey. It did indeed rot my brain: Menolly and her harp and her dragons moved in and took over. I hid the book under my bed so I could read it twice in a row without being discovered. And the memory of the wonder I felt, as I entered this other world, is still as fresh as if it had happened yesterday. I know now that the book is no great work of literary genius, it is merely decent sci-fi. But it will remain forever on my "favorites" shelf, in a place of honor, as my first science fiction novel

I love this book! It is one of my favorites. I started reading it just to find something to read. Then I feel in love with it and the series. It is the story of a girl named Menolly who lives in a sea hold on the planet Pern. She studies with an old harper, Petrion, and learns music. She writes some songs and he sends them to Harper Hall, the main place where all music comes from. Then the harper passes away and her parents forbid her from ever playing an instrument or singing. So a new harper comes and he tries to find the person who wrote the songs. They thought it was a boy and never suspected Menolly. Then one day she had an accident and cut her wrist. Her wrist and hand were crippled from then on so she could not play and instrument. Then one day she runs away, but gets caught in a deadly Threadfall. So she takes shelter and finds nine firelizard eggs (firelizards are a small version of dragons.) there, and when they hatch she impresses them. Then one day Thread falls again and she is stuck. She tries to run but is not fast enough. Then a miracle happens and her life changes forever. Anne McCaffrey is brilliant and can not do any better on this book. The characters are well defined and you fell like you are there. The title fits the story perfect. If you want to experience excitement with myth you should defiantly read this book.

This is an excellent book. I thoughly enjoyed it, and read it in one day. And I will admit, Menolly is now my favorite character of all of Anne McCaffery's series. I didn't like her very much in The White Dragon, because I felt like she monitered jaxom too much.In this book, you will read about a young 15 year old girl, blessed with the gifts of music and singing. But she lives in a sea hold, with her extremely strict father, Yanus, and equally strict mother, Mavi. They despise the fact that a girl of all thing wants to make music, and makes up her own tunes. They forbid it. But when Menolly goes against them, she gets beaten. Bad goes to worse, until Menolly finally runs away from Half-Circle Sea Hold. She runs into the legendary fire-lizards, and.... well, if I tell you anymore I will ruin this small novel for you.Pick it up! Read it! You won't be able to put it down.

Menolly's dream is to be a singer and songwriter, but her Hold (and in particular her leader, and incidentally, father) forbids girls from so much as humming music. When Menolly is injured, it seems as though music is forever forbidden to her. Frustrated by her cruel and neglectful family, Menolly runs away from home. In a cave, she helps a fire lizard hatch her babies. Menolly is imprinted on the nine babies and teaches them to sing. A simple young adult tale that many young adolescent readers will enjoy and identify with, though the lack of deep characters, the slow pace and predictability, the unoriginality in the face of other superior novels of the genre, may hinder some enjoyment. Grade: C
